Little Big Town has a song on their new album. It’s a song about never giving up. About fighting for someone you love until a new day breaks. I recognize that. It’s what Amy was trying to do. It’s what I was trying to do. Both of us slogging through her cancer. Trying so hard to get to the morning that had no cancer lurking in the corners and no strangers with plastic name tags. Just a normal morning. We would look at each other and cry and hold hands and let silence do its thing. Sit together on the crinkly bed and watch dust float in the sunshine. Sisters with days ahead. It never came. Everything she went through was just snatched away like it didn’t matter and then she was gone. Not her fight though. Not her will to get through it. Nope. It’s still here. With me. I know how bad she wanted to stay. What she went through to do that. She wanted to stay. So, so much. And, when that song started playing in my car last week I felt it. I’m still fighting for her to have her morning. A day when hospitals and accidents aren’t calling the shots. When her effort is honored and celebrated. When she is just Amy. Our Amy. Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t stop trying to get there. I will get there.
